Ya Ha Tinda is considered part of Banff National Park but anyone will tell you it is far from the well-trodden trails close to town. You have to travel over a mountain range to get to these parts. It is home to vast alpine meadows and is the last working horse ranch of the National Parks Service. The Bighorn River runs through this area. A short steep hike up from just inside the gates takes you to a lookout over Crescent Falls. On the side of the bank at the top are a stand of tall trees. The uppermost branches make an ideal lookout for predators and prey alike. As we rested at the lookout we spotted the beginning of the chase, an eagle defending the top perch from a curious raven. We managed to snap a few photos but their speed was almost too much for the camera to capture. Even from a distance, one could feel the power in their wings.

This painting honours the beauty and power of these majestic birds and pays homage to the unique history of the Ya Ha Tinda.
