Do It Yourself — use a DSLR, iPhone, or Android device
Photo Tips
avoid direct sunlight; outdoor overcast skies give the best light, or photograph in the shade
when photographing indoors position the art to face the window; if the light is uneven put a diffuser such as a white bed sheet between the window and the art
avoid brightly coloured surroundings; if the art is on the lawn outdoors, reflected light from the grass will create a green cast
position the camera parallel to the art piece; sometimes moving out of parallel will reduce reflections & specular highlights, the resulting perspective distortion can be corrected in the file
if you use a DSLR a circular polarizer can help control the reflections and specular highlights that are common with oil and acrylic paintings
if you use a mobile phone camera don’t use filters
use the highest resolution of your camera and fill as much of the image frame as you can with the subject art piece
if you have a colour reference card or a grey card place it beside the art piece in the same lighting condition; this helps to set the correct colour balance
